Source: AFP<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What other country has a nationwide social media ban for children?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On June 29, 2023, a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/france\/article\/2023\/06\/29\/france-requires-parental-consent-for-under-15s-on-social-media_6039514_7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requiring social media platforms to verify user age and obtain parental consent for those under 15 was enacted. This was <\/span>part of the French government\u2019s plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/studyinternational.com\/news\/duke-of-edinburghs-award\/\">reduce children&#8217;s screen time<\/a> and protect them from cyberbullying and other crimes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Australia, France will financially penalise the social media companies if the law is breached. Source: AFP<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 more countries that have existing social media bans or limitations in place<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On June 4, 2024, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surinenglish.com\/spain\/the-government-approves-the-law-that-raises-20250326064806-nt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain\u2019s government approved the draft law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the age of data protection consent for children to own social media accounts was raised from 14 to 16.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other things included in the draft include implementing a prison sentence for those who engage in deepfakes (images, videos, or audio that have been edited or generated using artificial intelligence) and banning under-18s from accessing games with \u201cloot boxes,\u201d in-game purchases that open a surprise prize that more often than not, leads to disappointment and more purchases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the footsteps of Spain, Norway was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/oct\/23\/norway-to-increase-minimum-age-limit-on-social-media-to-15-to-protect-children?anr=warning&amp;anrId=3246064310.ecf74a448fd5f00bd98b693ff50f81dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last reported to be in the midst of<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting its age of parental consent for children to create social media accounts from 13 to 15 back in October 2024. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There haven\u2019t been any updates yet, but with research from the Norwegian Media Authority showing that more than half of nine-year-olds, 58% of 10-year-olds and 72% of 11-year-olds are on social media, millions of accounts could be affected. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometime in 2018, Italy passed a law that states those under-14s must seek parental consent before they sign up for social media accounts.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been no updates since then, and no known penalty on the social media platforms if the law is breached.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>South Korea<\/h3>\n<p>South Korea is not implementing a total social media ban, but it is enacting a nationwide ban on the use of mobile phones and other digital devices in classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>This law will take effect starting from the next school year in March 2026.\u00a0The new law aims to combat concerns over smartphone addiction and its negative impact on students&#8217; academic performance and social development.<\/p>\n<p>However, exceptions are made for students with disabilities who need the devices as assistive tools for learning.<\/p>\n<h3>Denmark<\/h3>\n<p>Soon to join the list of countries with a social media ban for children is Denmark. The government has <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-social-media-ban-children-7862d2a8cc590b4969c8931a01adc7f4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed banning social media access for children under 15<\/a>. Source: AFP<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A European Union-level effort&#8230;or not<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the EU\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation &#8212; the strongest privacy and security law in the world &#8212; states that member countries can set the minimum user age of consent for platforms to process their data as long as it is over 13. However, the data can still be processed if parents give their consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Several countries have chosen to set this limit at the minimum age of 13. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, 13-year-olds in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/euconsent.eu\/digital-age-of-consent-under-the-gdpr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, and Sweden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can consent to having their data processed by platforms without parental consent. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not something Macron is too happy about. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2025, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europeanconservative.com\/articles\/news\/france-spain-initiative-ban-under-15s-social-restricting-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France and Spain teamed up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lead an initiative to ban minors under the age of 15 from accessing social media throughout the European Union (EU). The goal was simple: have social media platforms implement stricter age verification systems under threat of penalties.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is easier said than done, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Let\u2019s be clear &#8230; [a] wide social media ban is not what the European Commission is doing. It&#8217;s not where we are heading to. Why? Because this is the prerogative of our member states,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/emmanuel-macron-social-media-ban-eu-commission-france-paris-stabbing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the European Commission can\u2019t force the hands of all of its member countries, it can tighten the leash on social media platforms through the Digital Services Act (DSA), a regulation that centralises supervisory powers for major platforms and allows the EU\u2019s executive arm to better protect minors. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond working on EU-wide guidelines for how platforms can comply with the DSA on minors&#8217; protection, the European Commission is also working on an age verification mobile app that allows users to verify whether they are over 18, without disclosing their exact age.
