But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/karrina-pancoast-82410975\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karrina Pancoast<\/span><\/a> jumped at the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn&#8217;t want to teach,&#8221; says Pancoast. &#8220;But getting a work visa in South Korea was almost impossible. I was applying for psychology jobs, but none of the companies wanted to sponsor a foreigner.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What was so appealing about this East Asian country that Pancoast was willing to give up so much?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling in love with Korea<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born and bred in the US, Pancoast initially joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regent.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regent University<\/a> in Virginia to study Christian ministry in hopes of becoming a youth paster. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After completing an internship at a church, she realised that church politics was not for her, leading her to drop out of the programme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a bit of soul-searching and pressure from her grandmother to return to school, she stumbled upon a subject that piqued her interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was browsing around, but there was one programme that stood out to me \u2014 psychology,\u201d says Pancoast. \u201cIt looked like something I would be interested in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After thinking about it for a few months, Pancoast eventually signed up for an Associate of Arts in Psychology programme at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tulsacc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tulsa Community College<\/a>. Source: Karrina Pancoast<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, that&#8217;s where Pancoast and I first met, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/asiacampus.utah.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Utah&#8217;s Asia Campus<\/a> in South Korea. She was a roommate of mine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While getting her BSc in Psychology was her accomplishment, a dream, it was one of the toughest years of her life \u2014 and I can attest to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was common to see her returning to the dorm, crying from how brutal her classes were. Source: Karrina Pancoast<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The thing is, Pancoast&#8217;s goal had always been to return to South Korea to work in the psychology field, but when applying for jobs, she was unsuccessful, as getting a work visa was impossibly difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Still, she persisted. She liked living here too much. Source: Karrina Pancoast<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not-so-Seoulful: The reality of teaching English abroad in South Korea<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While it was easier for Pancoast to land an English teaching gig than to snag a psychology role, let&#8217;s be real, it isn&#8217;t exactly a walk in the park either.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to find a decent \ud559\uc6d0 (hagwon),&#8221; laments Pancoast. &#8220;So many teachers have such bad experiences teaching English abroad in South Korea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \ud559\uc6d0 (hagwon), also known as &#8220;cram school,&#8221; is a for-profit private after-school academy that is basically a second round of school for Korean students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These hagwons are so ingrained its school culture that parents drop serious cash. We&#8217;re talking about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/east-asia\/1k-per-tuition-subject-s-korea-s-daechi-moms-who-go-all-in-to-put-their-kids-in-elite-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US$689 (one million South Korean won) to US$2,068 (three million won)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per subject monthly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To date, there are approximately<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theteflacademy.com\/blog\/what-is-hagwon\/#:~:text=Students%20attend%20hagwons%20for%20lessons,attend%20a%20hagwon%20every%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hagwons in South Korea, with more than<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theteflacademy.com\/blog\/what-is-hagwon\/#:~:text=Students%20attend%20hagwons%20for%20lessons,attend%20a%20hagwon%20every%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Seoul, the country&#8217;s capital, alone. About<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theteflacademy.com\/blog\/what-is-hagwon\/#:~:text=Students%20attend%20hagwons%20for%20lessons,attend%20a%20hagwon%20every%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75%<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of elementary and high school students attend these cram schools daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as big as the industry may be, it also holds an extremely negative reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late-night classes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students often attend hagwons after their regular school day and would sometimes be there until as late as 10 p.m. or even midnight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the decades, South Korean leaders have tried to implement regulations by setting curfews to ban them outright in the 1980s, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/archive\/6595987\/teacher-leave-those-kids-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the need for schools is so high due to the intensity of the education system that they weren&#8217;t going anywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R_QkVyzKF2k?si=5vc72cwJ8rft9fW9\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shady practices<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its popularity among Korean parents, many hagwons are known for not playing by the rules, and Pancoast was one of the many victims of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrivate hagwons will do everything so they can cut corners. They won\u2019t file their taxes and extort money from their teachers by putting some charges on them. That happened at my first hagwon,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile they provided housing, the apartment was mouldy, and it wasn\u2019t the best environment to live in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some teachers even struggle to get their basic rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teacher in Busan is a testament to this. \u201cMany are getting fewer leave days than they should, and the schools decide when to take leaves without consulting the teachers and not paying the teachers for their paid leaves,\u201d he said during a rally in front of the Busan Regional Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labour, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asianews.network\/we-are-workers-in-korea-too-foreign-english-hagwon-teachers-fight-for-annual-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia News Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that&#8217;s just scratching the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discrimination and physical abuse against foreign teachers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancoast might have had it rough, but even she admits that some teachers have it way worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, foreign English teachers in Icheon were invited to a &#8220;mandatory seminar&#8221; only to be told to \u201cnot molest students,\u201d according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/southkorea\/globalcommunity\/20181030\/foreign-teachers-told-dont-molest-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Korea Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That came about because foreign teachers are stereotyped as predators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as if that isn&#8217;t bad enough, there are reports of ESL teachers being physically abused as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI once had an interview with a hagwon that seemed totally normal,&#8221; Pancoast shares. &#8220;But I did a little digging and found out that one of the foreign teachers had been assaulted by the head of the hagwon.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing racism is common too, especially for teachers of colour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One black American teacher told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2022\/09\/09\/national\/kcampus\/hagwon-antidiscrimination-national-human-rights-commission\/20220909070006760.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Korea JoongAng Daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI remember when my boss said she didn&#8217;t want me and another dark-skinned teacher sharing a class because it would be too uncomfortable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_481310\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-481310\" class=\"size-full wp-image-481310 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/studyinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/4-5.png\" alt=\"teaching English abroad\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/studyinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/4-5.png 1024w, https:\/\/studyinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/4-5-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/studyinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/4-5-768x576.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/768;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-481310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pancoast visiting Arirang TV, a South Korean international broadcasting station, as part of a cultural immersion programme at the University of Utah Asia Campus. Source: Karrina Pancoast<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dedication, empathy, and understanding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with elementary and middle school students isn\u2019t easy, especially when they all come with their own little quirks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for Pancoast, she\u2019s dedicated to building a safe environment for her students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMental health is still very much a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hir.harvard.edu\/the-struggle-of-mental-health-care-delivery-in-south-korea-and-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taboo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Korea,&#8221; says Pancoast. &#8220;I have students in my class with autism and ADHD, but you can\u2019t mention it to their parents. The parents don\u2019t want to get their children tested or diagnosed either.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, she adapts her teaching to fit her students&#8217; needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some days, her students would walk into class sad or crying because of a fight with a parent or for having a rough day.
